PERSIAN EYE MAINTENANCE

Commercial eye stain products can be obtained at: www.eyeenvy.com or Anna Natural Pet

Or you can make your own.

Homemade Eye Stain Recipes

POWDER:  (to “pack” under each eye – do not get IN the eye)

  • 2 Fish Mox capsules (500mg amoxicillin capsules.  You can get it online, no Rx required, see link below)
  • 2 oz (1/4 cup) boric acid powder

** Put a little of the powder on a damp finger and wipe it onto the stained areas under the eyes, then work it in with your finger.  Doing this daily will help keep the staining to a minimum – especially good for white fur.

CLEANING SOLUTION – for cleaning ONLY – do NOT put in the eye (apply with a make-up pad, or towel and wipe down the stained areas):

Boric Acid & Witch Hazel

  • 1 cup boiled water (or distilled water)

  • 1 tsp boric acid powder

  • 1 tbs witch hazel

SOLUTION FOR PUTTING IN THE EYES – then treat below the eyes with one of the above to help prevent staining (if adding the anti-biotic makes you uncomfortable, you can use straight OTC eye drops to sluice the eyes out occasionally):

  • 0.5 oz bottle of artificial tears  (regular OTC artificial tears)

  • 0.2 ml of Tylan 50

  • 1 cc (ml) syringe with needle attached

**Draw the Tylan out of the bottle with the syringe then insert the needle into the opening of the eye drop bottle and squirt it in.  Shake before using.  Mark the date on the bottle as you don’t want this sitting around too long (a few weeks at most) … get small bottles and remix fairly often … add a drop or two in each eye only when the tears are excessive or have turned brownish…(you don’t want to overuse the anti-biotics and create a resistance) continue for a few days and it should clear up; if it doesn’t then consult your veterinarian.

SUPPLIES:  Everything required for these recipes can be found online (no RX required) at: http://pet-healthcare.revivalanimal.com with the possible exception of witch hazel and/or boric acid which you can get at a local pharmacy or grocery store.

In addition to the ingredients, you will need a syringe with needle attached to measure and retrieve the Tylan from the bottle and to insert it into the OTC eye drop container.  Get several -- needles should not be reused.

**Note... Tylan comes in 2 strengths, 50 and 200. Be sure to use the 50 with the recipe – it comes in liquid form and must be refrigerated.  Get the smallest bottle available as you are unlikely to use much of it before the expiration date.
