THE NAME GAME

My first litter was born on Halloween in 2005.  At the time I had no naming convention for kittens.  I did give most of them names as they occurred to me, but they were kept a deep, dark secret as I didn't want to influence the 'forever' name chosen by the new families.  After a number of litters, I gave up that idea and switched to the 'alphabet litters.'  Below you can see litter members by color code, 'milk name' (the temporary name I give them), and 'forever name' (the permanent name given to them by their new families.)

Since my kittens are often reserved at a very young age, some get their forever name quite early and become known by that name, though I do keep them by 'milk' name and color code in my records.  A few families have chosen to keep the 'milk' name.  Within a day of their birth, I color code them--initially with nail polish on a foot, then later with neck bands.  Once I feel confident of their genders, they get their milk names after considerable deliberation.  Fans who follow the kittens through Kitty Cam have a great deal of fun coming up with names for a given letter and I try to foil them by thinking of names no one has thought of, since this is MY time to have fun with names that the poor little tykes won't have to live with forever.  However, every now and then someone comes with a name too cute to pass up.
